The Iconic New York Bookstore: The Strand, Rare Books, and Collectibles

By Zoe Fanzo

The rare and collectible items can be found on the 3rd floor of this legendary New York City bookstore.
Only 250 copies of Ulysses are signed by both Joyce and Matisse.

The Strand Bookstore is a legendary staple of New York City, boasting 18 miles of new, used, and rare books. Founded in 1927, it is a hub of culture and literature, tucked away in the East Village. Though thousands of people filter into the store everyday, not many know that its top floor is occupied by rare and collectible books, many of which are exorbitantly priced.

The Rare Book Room, which occupies the 3rd floor and is open Monday to Saturday from 9:30 am to 6:15 pm and Sunday from 11:00 am to 6:15 pm, features some incredible finds. A Critical Magazine edited by Poe and a First Edition Hounds of the Baskervilles are among the amazing pieces. Their most expensive book is a copy of James Joyce’s Ulysses, priced at $38,000 and their oldest book is an edition of Magna Moralia, priced at $4,500. While their collection includes many rare items, it also boasts less intimidating books, like modern signed first editions, which are readily available for examination.

The Rare Book experts are Jane J. and Tony W., and the featured genres include Fiction & Lit, Science & Non-Fiction, Social Sciences & Religion, History, Travel & Exploration, Art & Photography, Performing Arts, and Children & Illustrated. More information can be found at https://www.strandbooks.com/rare-books/. The experts can be contacted at rareinfo@strandbooks.com or 212.473.1452 ext. 625.
